Cavan

Nestled between 2 drumlins which gave rise to the name Cavan or An Cabhán meaning 'the hollow place', Cavan is a lively and busy destination. Located a 2 hour drive from both Dublin (123km) and Belfast (142km) and 3 hours from Galway (170km), Cavan has many fine buildings, busy pubs, nightclubs, restaurants, cafes, shops, a leisure centre, cinema, County Cavan 18 - hole golf course, Cavan Equestrian Centre and bowling alley.

A new state of the art library  is located on Farnham Street. The library has an extensive reference section with information on the history and heritage of the county. The building also houses the Genealogy Centre and Tourist Information Office.

Cavan is an excellent touring base with a diversity of accommodation to suit all. Cavan Crystal Hotel on the Dublin Rd and the Radisson SAS Farnham Estate are 4 star hotels on the outskirts of town. The Hotel Kilmore (3 star) is located on the Dublin Rd. The Farnham Arms Hotel (2 star) in the centre of town offers homely accommodation and regular entertainment in the bar. In addition there are several B&Bs and guesthouses available in and just outside Cavan town. Visit the accommodation section for details.

Restaurants in Cavan include The Oak Room, Opus One, The Side Door, Little Sicily, The Bridge, The Big Apple, Sajan and The Bramley.  Many pubs also serve food.

The arts scene is vibrant in Cavan town with a variety of local music and cultural festivals throughout the year. Both the County Cavan Drama Festival and the NYAH Arts Festival take place annually during March/April. The annual St. Patrick's Day Parade (March 17th) draws large crowds to see the colour and creativity of the floats. Many heritage events take place throughout the town during Heritage Week in Aug/Sept of every year. Traditional music sessions regularly take place in the town.  The first Cavan Summer Festival took place in July 2008 and was an amazing week for all the family.

Cavan town is rich in history and many buildings have survived for generations. Those interested in following the designated town walks (available at the Tourist Office) will discover a wealth of historical and architectural wonders. Click here for more information on the history and heritage of Cavan. Kilmore Cathedral with its famous Romanesque doorway is located 3 miles outside the town on the Killeshandra road.
