Ballyconnell is a vibrant and picturesque town in West Cavan located on the Shannon-Erne Waterway. This waterway links the Shannon and Erne rivers. This canal was initially opened in 1856, but was re-opened recently for cruisers, boats and canoes to explore the waterway. Balllyconnell is located 28km from Cavan town.
Ballyconnell is a lively town, with a number of pubs, restaurants and nightclub. The nearby 4****Slieve Russell Hotel & Country Club has an 18-hole championship golf course, par 3 course, tennis courts, country club, several bars and restaurants. Nearby ODD Gamespark provides outdoor activities for active groups in search of some high octane fun activity.
The area has many sites of archaeological interest, including the promontory fort at Ballyhugh 3 miles east and Killycluggin 4 miles south-west, where the decorated Killycluggin Stone was found.

This museum is unique being the only museum in the world dedicated exclusively to the ancient craft of the Saddler and Harness Maker. The museum documents the various demands placed upon the saddler from farming, sports, military and transport. The museum exhibits include: 1920's side saddle, shire harness, over 60 leather samples, harness decoration and buckles, driving collars, coaching coats, whips, saddle trees, muzzles, lamps and poultice boots. The museum also houses several driving carriages and horse drawn farm implements.

Ballyhugh Arts and Cultural Centre is dedicated to the promotion and sharing of the rich cultural heritage of West Cavan. Ballyhugh runs courses and workshops in arts, traditional crafts, Irish music and dance, creative writing and yoga. Exhibitions, live shows, ceilis, concerts and lectures are held all year round. Acting as a guide for visitors interested in local history, the centre also houses a unique collection of artefacts and local photographs.
