Take the Cavan road out of Gowna and turn left along the Arvagh Road towards Scrabby Hill (this road can be busy.) After 500 metres, take the first right down the old Bog Road. Walk down the lane for 600 metres, until you find yourself in the middle of a used Bog. Take the first right, up the Greyhound lane. There will be Bog and fields around you with fabulous hedgerows and flora and fauna. At the T junction (1 km), turn right up the hill. Follow the road round to the left and continue straight on along a small lane. Go up and down two steep hills, passing traditional Irish cottages. At the end of the road, turn left on to the main Cavan Road for 10m then take the first right down a small lane. As you walk down there are fabulous views across Bawnoola Loch and bog on your left. The bird song is gorgeous and the hedgerows are well stocked.
Follow the lane round to the right and it goes straight on. Take the path to your left as though into the farmyard but 15metres on your right is a path which takes you into a wood on a single file path. You come to a broader path which brings you down to Swan Lough. Walk along the Swan Loch shore passing through gates and a farm yard. This can be boggy if wet. There is right of way in the farm yard. Emerge out on to the Gowna/Granard Road. Turn right and right again, over a stile, along the western shore of Loch Swan into the village.
